Baby Boomers’ View of Hearing Aids
Baby Boomers are changing the attitudes of everyone about hearing aids. The past view of Hearing Aids is less than desirable…from making someone look old to not even working for people who have a sensory neural hearing loss.
It is so great to see how attitudes are changing about wearing hearing aids. To me it is downright refreshing. For the past 35 years I have done everything within my power to try to convince people they should at least try wearing a hearing aid. It has been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to motivate most people to at least try to see if they would benefit from amplification…even when the patient agrees they have a hearing loss and know their hearing loss is causing much pain in their lives.

The Meaning Behind the Sounds of Words
We all agree that the most important aspect of communication is, of course, the words we use. Then comes the inflections and tones of sounds that the words are presented or spoke in. We all have heard it said that it’s not what you said, it was how you said it.
Communication all comes down to so many levels of receiving information that we try to decipher what was said or how it was said. Bottom line, we will always remember how we felt after having a conversation much more than what was said during a conversation. The reason for this is that it is the tonal part of words that communicate the most powerful part of communications and that’s our feelings.

Can Hearing Aids Help the Ringing in Your Ears?
Almost all patients who I’ve fit with hearing aids have some degree of tinnitus or ringing in their ears. What’s the cause? So far there are a lot of ideas; however, no one as yet has come up with a cure.
The question is: Can a Hearing Aid help? The answer is: Most of the time. A hearing aid will bring all the sounds you are missing up to a normal level of hearing. In doing so almost 85% of my patients notice that their tinnitus is reduced greatly when they wear their hearing aids. About 15% say they can’t hear the ringing at all and about 10% say it doesn’t seem to have any affect.

What is your perception of Hearing Aids?
I remember when the only people that would buy a hearing aid were people who were dragged into my office by someone who usually said he or she “is going to buy hearing aids or I am getting a divorce”. There was no doubt that hearing aids were going to be purchased that day. There had to be an extreme amount of motivation to overcome the resistance of purchasing hearing aids.
Hearing aids have always been talked about as not working by most Doctors as they told everyone if they had nerve loss, hearing aids wouldn’t help. Well, come to find out, that’s the kind of hearing loss the hearing aids helped! Interesting how the story changes when Doctors are dispensing hearing aids; isn’t it?

Invest in your hearing
What an amazing time we are living in! Who knew we would be living in an age where we can literally invest in some of the best companies in the world and not break the bank doing it. Who would have thought?
Without a doubt, the most important investment we can make is in ourselves. It may be education or improving our skills up to higher levels so we will be worth more money as employees. According to Better Hearing Institute if you have a hearing loss, you better be investing in getting your hearing corrected. Their study about hearing loss is very revealing to all of us. It tells us how important our hearing is in relationship to how much money we make in the workplace and how hearing better can improve our careers. It was noted that someone with an uncorrected hearing loss on average makes about $1000 a month less when compared with someone who has normal hearing.

Hearing Aids Have Changed My Life
I used to wear hearing aids only when I went out. This was to avoid being left out of conversations and to save myself from making embarrassing comments after misunderstanding the direction of conversations.
I know firsthand how frustrating it is to constantly misunderstand what people are saying. I know how awful it is having to ask anyone with a soft voice to please repeat every sentence…just one more time. This gets especially annoying when it’s someone related to you.
I now wear digital behind-the-ear directional hearing aids and love them.
What changed me and how I viewed wearing hearing aids forever, is what my son related to me about what his daughter said to him after she spent a weekend at my house. My 8 year old granddaughter asked her father why I didn’t like her.

Are Hearing Aids a Sign of Genius?
An interesting question – especially during this time of economic uncertainty when not hearing well in any work environment could cost you your job. If this question were posed even ten years ago, the response you might have given would likely have been a negative one. You might have said, ‘No, hearing aids are ugly’ or ‘Are you kidding, they make me look old’.
We are seeing this as a time of great perceptional change, especially when it comes to wearing something in our ears. The major factor behind this shift is the popularity of personal communication devices these days. Almost everyone wears a Bluetooth devise, especially when driving, to be able to talk on the phone. Many states are legislating this and I think we all agree it will make our roads much safer. The other personal devices used today (iPods and mp3 players) have made it almost popular to have something in your ear.

A hearing aid can improve your mood.
You’ve always been a happy, sociable person, but lately you just don’t feel like socializing.
If you have an undiagnosed hearing loss, this has a tremendous impact on your mood and general outlook from day to day. Because you don’t even realize you are losing your hearing, you can’t pinpoint why you no longer want to socialize.
One of the worst feelings in the world is being part of a group…..but not really part of the group. You begin to feel isolated and angry. This anger and frustration tends to spill over to all aspects of your life. You try to place the blame for these feelings on anything but admitting you may be losing your hearing; work, partner or stress.

Baby Boomers – Make your life a little less stressful…
If you’re a baby boomer under a lot of stress – you are certainly not alone.
Many baby boomers have reached tremendous levels of success in their careers, but typically this responsibility brings a lot of stress with it. Throw an undiagnosed or uncorrected hearing loss into the equation and get ready for the ulcers.
Many symptoms of a hearing loss result in stressful situations – missing important information and making a bad decision, not being able to hear well in group settings such as conferences, hearing the wrong thing and responding inappropriately, declining social invitations due to embarrassment at not being able to hear, co-workers stop having conversations with you because they become frustrated at having to repeat everything, developing anger at those same co-workers…and the list could go on and on.
