Self Esteem and Hearing Loss
Making decisions …
No one gives it a second thought about how easy it is to carry on conversations throughout the day. What if you only got part of those conversations? What if you even got the wrong understanding of what was said to you? Not just once but many times a day?
Those close to you…
How close could you be with someone you lived with if you missed what was said? Of course you didn’t tell them you didn’t get it because you knew it was irritating for them to constantly repeat what they said back to you. Do you think it would take very long for you to start second guessing as to what they were talking about? How long would it take before your second guessing catches up to you? Sooner or later it always does.
Your confidence…
How many times in a day are you guessing or agreeing with the people talking to you because you just aren’t getting it all?  How many times would this have to happen before you started to wonder what others must be thinking about you? How would you feel about yourself knowing you kind of lied to someone – making them think you got it when you really didn’t. Would you start to blame yourself?  Or would you start to blame others?
About being right…
We all seem to be the same when it comes to being right. We all think we are right, and we often go to great extent trying to be right or prove that we are. This is one of the basic fundamentally challenging issues with someone with a hearing loss. They think and usually have to be right, however, because of not getting it right or misunderstanding and getting it wrong. What happens to this person deep inside when they find out they were wrong and don’t want to admit it?
Social life…
I was a popular play and the man behind me was talking loudly telling his wife he couldn’t hear what was being said. I thought for a moment about letting him use one of my hearing aids, then I realized he knew he couldn’t hear before he came. I know his wife was embarrassed and I wonder how he felt sitting there for almost two hours not getting what was said? I wonder if he would get help or just stop going out? I also wondered about his wife and the effect his hearing loss had on her life.
Health and mental well being…
Being happy is the most important medicines we can give ourselves for our overall health. Being constantly stressed, fatigued because of relationships and interpersonal feelings about yourself, can be overcome if a hearing loss is causing these conditions.
Personal responsibility…
If you have a hearing loss it is your responsibility to get it corrected. It will never change or get better because you are blaming others and not taking the responsibility for your not being able to communicate with others.
