How a Hearing Loss Can Affect Your Life – Part 2

Without medical intervention at an early stage, hearing loss can quickly progress from a minor situation requiring a small hearing aid to a major medical condition requiring more extensive treatments. What most people do not realize is that a majority of aging adults in the United States will experience some form of hearing loss as they age. Within the group of adults who begin to experience hearing loss as they age, there will be a majority who compensate for the condition for a long period of time prior to seeking medical assistance.

Hearing loss is a fact of life for many people. It is a condition that they can deny, excuse and work around for long periods of time prior to seeking medical assistance. Although hearing loss can affect a patient’s life in many dramatic ways, patients will often live in denial prior to accepting their condition and seeking medical attention and treatment. This denial, without intervention, can often lead down a path to withdrawal and even major depression.

Hearing aids are one of the best forms of treatment available to hearing loss patients. They should be used at the earliest diagnosis of hearing loss, and should be used in both ears. Though most patients disagree with this suggestion, use of a hearing aid in one ear only can cause hearing loss progression in the other ear. In order to lessen the affects of hearing loss, hearing aids should be considered by any patient with a diagnosis of mild to moderate hearing loss.

Modern digital hearing aids are available for patients diagnosed with hearing loss. In the past, the only option available to hearing loss patients was a large and bulky behind the ear hearing aids to assist with their hearing. Today’s modern hearing aids are small, almost microscopic, and can be made to fit entirely inside the ear canal. These miniature hearing aid models can greatly increase a patient’s ability to clearly hear conversation, affecting a positive influence on their relationship with friends and family.
