Hearing Loss Is Often First Recognized By Others

It is a rare thing for a person experiencing hearing loss to be the first to recognize the problem. In most instances the loss is recognized by friends or family, either a spouse or children, who are close to the person losing their hearing. In some cases the fact the hearing loss is not instantly recognized is due to denial, the patient being unwilling to admit there is a problem with their hearing.

If a spouse is the first one to recognize hearing loss in their loved one, the suggestion of a medical problem is usually not taken well. There can be arguments and accusations, denials and disagreements. In extreme cases, where there are already marital problems, the simple accusation of a problem can lead to separation and even divorce. There is a need for the steady foundation of a healthy marriage to deal with a trauma such as hearing loss without major difficulty. Children and friends are sometimes considered even less credible than a spouse, with the person experiencing the hearing loss tending to laugh off the suggestion of a problem. Again, there can be accusations and arguments which can have a detrimental effect on these types of personal relationships.

The simple fact is hearing loss is a traumatic experience that is difficult to handle. As in any traumatic life changing event, there are significant stresses placed on personal and professional relationships. It takes strong will and perseverance to weather the trials of a major medical diagnosis such as hearing loss. The first step to relieving the stress of hearing loss is to get an early and thorough diagnosis of the condition. Any medication or aids to be used to treat the hearing loss will be determined by this initial diagnosis.

There are different types of hearing loss, from simple ear wax build up to significant nerve related injury. Each type will require a slightly different treatment, which also depends on the degree of the loss. Options for treatment of hearing loss, from medication to surgery, can only be identified by audiologists and hearing professionals. Proper use of hearing aids can go a long way toward restoring hearing function. Recognition of the condition and the support of family and friends are also excellent tools to get through the trauma of hearing loss.
