How Soon Should You Start Wearing a Hearing Aid – Part 2
I often ask people who come to get help with their hearing loss how their loss is affecting those who they are close to. At least 95% tell me that’s the real reason they came to see me, because of the effect it was having with those close to them.
Another extremely important reason to start wearing hearing aids early is to keep the stimulation of sound to the brain going. Over time if there is a lack of sound stimulation to the brain it almost always causes a loss of the patient’s ability to comprehend or make out words.
So when should you think about wearing a hearing aid? I would encourage you to act when you realize it is starting to affect your life at work and especially with those you are close to.
In my practice we see patients who have put off getting help for 10 to 50 years. Believe me, if they had only seen someone when they were first starting to have difficulty hearing they could have avoided much of the pain and frustration they have gone through due to their hearing loss. So many patients don’t realize they have allowed a hearing loss to control and dictate who they talked to, where they went, and even the kind of job they had.
I always ask patients, “When you went to the eye doctor and you found out you didn’t have 20/20 vision, did you purchase glasses to correct it even though you could still see?” They always told me, “Of course I did.”
If you have a hearing loss and it is starting to affect you, even though you can still hear, are you going to get help? I hope your answer is, “Of course I am.” I promise you it will be one of the most important decisions you can make for your life now and for your future.
