Marriage and Hearing Loss
One of the most important aspects of a wonderful marriage is good communication. It is so important to really listen to your spouse and understand what your partner is trying to say. If your mate has to keep repeating things because you don’t hear, or if you pretend to hear when you don’t, you could have problems. Your spouse may even stop trying to communicate with you unless it’s really necessary, and you will miss out on all the little things you used to enjoy talking about with him/her.
If you have some hearing loss, even minimal hearing loss, you may miss something important. You may hear your spouse speaking, but don’t hear all the words correctly and misunderstand what he/she is saying. Your mate may have been trying to tell you that you have a hearing problem, but you don’t believe it – or don’t want to believe it. If someone suggests that you might have some hearing loss, it’s probably true.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Life can be so much richer and more enjoyable for you. Just take that first step and get your hearing tested by a professional. There are various hearing aids that can get you back in the flow of things again. Through the years there have been many improvements in hearing aids. Years ago a hearing aid consisted of a box the size of a deck of cards with a wire connected to an ear piece. In this modern age you can get extremely small aids that are hardly noticeable. Because of new technology and design, the devices have also seen a vast improvement in quality.
Do yourself and your spouse a favor and get your hearing tested. If you find that you do have some hearing loss that can be corrected with a well-fitting hearing aid, don’t hesitate to get one. Your family and friends will enjoy visiting with you again when they know you can hear and understand them. Your life can be much more pleasant and stress-free when you don’t have to keep asking people to repeat what they say to you. Your partner will be grateful that he/she doesn’t have to raise his/her voice to communicate with you. The few dollars you spend for a good hearing aid will make your quality of life so much better that you will wish you had taken that important step earlier.
