Audiometric Testing Is Used To Detect Hearing Loss

An audiometric test is one of the key tests used by hearing professionals to determine the existence and extent of hearing loss.  Audiometric testing is a subjective test; it requires the full cooperation of the patient for an accurate test result.  An audiometer is used to perform the test and produces a graph showing the level of hearing in each ear.

During an audiometric test, the patient wears a pair of headphones or ear inserts while various tones are presented in one ear, then the other ear.  In the base method of testing hearing, a series of frequencies from 250 to 8,000 Hz are presented in each ear, the lowest decibel level perceived by the patient at each frequency tested is the patients threshold of hearing.  The full range of thresholds the patient can hear is charted on the audiogram, using an X for the left and O for the right ear.

There are legitimate reasons for having a technician perform the audiometric testing, as opposed to an automated computer test.  If there are abnormal results present during an audiometric test, the technician is easily able to analyze the results and make a decision as to whether more in depth testing is necessary.  There are additional tests that are performed if the hearing test is abnormal, such as bone conduction testing to determine if the mechanics of the ear are performing correctly.

The human ear uses a complicated set of processes to hear that can be affected by any number of internal and external influences.  Patients who suspect they are experiencing any level of hearing loss should seek out the assistance of a hearing professional as soon as possible.  Only accurate audiometric testing can determine the exact level of potential hearing loss a patient is experiencing.  Appropriately prescribed hearing aids are of significant benefit if they are provided early.

I hadn’t heard of that test before, how acurate are they and at what point can they detect even the slighest beginning stages of hearing loss?
