The Pain and Frustration a Hearing Loss Causes, Part 1
Every day we talk to many people – from our family, at work, and to people we don’t know. Have you ever thought about how many people you actually speak to every day? Now think about how many times you speak to those you’re close to? Interestingly, when we talk we take for granted that we are being heard.
Very seldom do we miss the signs that someone with a hearing loss isn’t really hearing us. Oh they can hear you talking; however what you said may not have been understood or perhaps even misinterpreted. I’m sure you know how different any sentence could be understood just by changing one or several words.
Now you’re starting to feel, or at least understand, how a person with a hearing loss starts to think. They have to be so careful because what if they didn’t get it right. Worse, they have no way of knowing if they got it right. It’s not unusual for any of us to get something wrong when we listen to someone. However, when this goes on day after day, instead of interrupting the person talking to you a hundred times to have them clarify what was said, it’s so much easier to pretend you got it. It’s not that you didn’t want to ask them to repeat what was said, you just knew that they may get so tired of you asking them to repeat that they may get really upset at you and it’s just not worth it. There are many elements to the feelings experienced by those diagnosed with hearing loss. Anger, frustration and resentment are often at the top of the list and can affect relationships between the diagnosed patients and their families and friends. There are many devices available for the management of hearing loss. The decision on which device is best for an individual’s specific needs should be determined by the patient, with the advice of a physician and an audiologist. When hearing loss is present in both ears and the doctor and audiologist recommend two hearing aids, many patients wonder whether this is necessary. There are several advantages to wearing a hearing aid in both hearing-impaired ears. Thanks a lot.
