There Are Two Types Of Hearing Loss That Can Benefit From The Use Of Hearing Aids

There are two significant types of hearing loss that can benefit from the use of hearing aids, conductive and sensorineural.  Both types of hearing loss prevent sound waves from fully entering the auditory system and being interpreted into coherent sound by the brain.  Although the medical causes of each type of hearing loss are different, both can be improved through the use of correctly prescribed hearing aids.

Conductive hearing loss is diagnosed when sound waves are prevented from transmission into the inner ear.  Conductive hearing loss can often be corrected through medical or surgical means; even those cases not improved through medicine and surgery can be improved with the use of hearing aids.  Some causes of conductive hearing loss can include wax buildup in the outer ear canal and fluid gathering in the Eustachian tube, which can block the movement of the eardrum.

Sensorineural hearing loss is caused when there is damage to the function of the nerves in the inner ear.  The cochlea is the worker of the inner ear and contains thousands of nerve endings that transmit sound into the auditory nerves and into the brain for interpretation.  Sensorineural hearing loss can have many causes, including genetic deformities, which are hereditary in nature.  There can also be external causes of sensorineural hearing loss including damaging medications, prolonged exposure to noise, physical trauma or tumors.

Though there are many different causes and symptoms of hearing loss, a visit to a hearing professional can usually determine the amount of damage and whether hearing aids can assist the situation.  Once hearing aids are prescribed for an individual with either type of hearing loss, they will generally find a much improved ability to hear.  Proper care, maintenance and use of hearing aids will amplify the sounds that are no longer able to be heard by the unassisted auditory system.
