Female Sex Hormone and Hearing Loss – Part 2

The authors of the Swedish study may hold new hope for future treatments of hearing loss in humans, both male and female. As with any medication, estradiol treatment can have side effects in humans; however, the side effects may be minimal in relation to the benefits found in treating hearing loss.

An additional study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology, May 2002, made a significant discovery in post-menopausal women and their level of hearing sensitivity. Using scientific measurements of estradiol levels and audiograms to test hearing sensitivity, this study concluded a lower level of estradiol in menopausal women may negatively affect their hearing sensitivity.

Further studies have found more and more organs in the human body, both male and female, that are positively influenced by estrogen. Estrogen therapy is anticipated to have positive effects on treatments for hearing loss.

Specific estrogen receptors, examined in medical study rats, were found in inner ear cells, inside the ear canal and in water regulating portions of the ear. This finding concluded estrogen can have an influence both on hearing and equilibrium, or balance.

Another effect of estradiol deficiencies in older adults may be the bone loss that can happen from decreased levels of estrogen in the body as people age. With the bone loss, the bones of the inner ear can be affected, causing potentially significant hearing loss.

The results of the 2002 published study concluded, between the control group of subjects and the study subjects, the post-menopausal women using hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, were less likely to be found in the group of study subjects with hearing loss.
